The De La Espada Hepburn King Bed is a masterclass in refined restraint, an upholstered bed that feels effortlessly elegant, light in presence yet rich in detail. Designed by Matthew Hilton, the Hepburn Bed explores the idea of "impossible lightness", using honest materials and intelligent construction to create a sense of openness in even the most compact spaces. Here, the striking combination of Black Oiled Ash and Sunniva 132 upholstery adds depth and softness in equal measure.

Raised lightly on slender, solid timber legs, the slim frame surrounds the mattress with barely-there borders, allowing the space around it to breathe. A gently upholstered headboard provides just enough comfort without overwhelming the form. Floating bedside tables further enhance the visual levity, attaching seamlessly beneath the frame to preserve clean lines and floor space. Whether placed in a minimalist retreat or layered, eclectic bedroom, Hepburn brings quiet sophistication to the room.

Expertly crafted in De La Espada’s solar-powered Portuguese workshop, the bed’s solid ash frame is sustainably sourced and finished by hand with a non-toxic black oil, revealing the unique character of the timber’s grain. The platform base, an advanced, black-dyed wood composite, includes ventilation for breathability and a smooth surface for mattress support. Upholstered in Sunniva 132, a premium textile by Kvadrat, the headboard offers a soft, tactile contrast to the architectural frame, resulting in a piece that is as thoughtfully engineered as it is visually serene.
Black Oiled Ash

Sourced from Portugal, Spain, and France, European Ash is a strong, versatile hardwood prized for its clean grain and natural elegance. Its pale cream to soft tan tones take stain exceptionally well, allowing for a deep, even black finish that highlights the timber’s texture and straight grain. Durable and beautifully balanced, it brings both strength and subtlety to any piece.

Sunniva 132

Designed by Raf Simons and Fanny Aronsen, Sunniva 132 blends wool, viscose, linen, and supportive fibres into a finely woven fabric with a subtle tweed-like pattern. Its delicate light green tone is elevated by a gentle sheen, adding depth and sophistication. With a Martindale rating of 50,000 rubs, it offers both visual refinement and everyday durability.

From Forest to Finish

Produced in De La Espada’s solar-powered workshop near Portugal’s Silver Coast, each piece is crafted by independent master artisans. Combining modern precision with traditional handwork, the process is tailored to bring out the finest qualities of every material used.

Intricate Joinery for Lasting Integrity

Rather than opting for simplified construction, De La Espada products are composed of multiple precisely crafted components. This intricate joinery allows for optimal timber grain direction, refined shaping, and durable long grain-to-long grain bonds—resulting in furniture with unmatched depth, strength, and detail.
