Encapsulating light and shade, movement and mechanics, the strikingly evocative Pan lamp is another example that embodies its designer’s approach to creating his sculpturally inclined pieces. Here he uses light like a physical material with the shadow as its counterpart, which together produce a visual/form that is essentially simple yet intriguing in its execution. But the designer is keen to give people an insight and understanding of the functionality of his design, hence incorporating an interactive process.

Pan comprises a translucent round shade that displays the faintest outline, and which acts to diffuse the light; an oversized ‘arm’ anchors the various elements, including a centrally located knob to control the amount of light emitted, and allows the user to decide on the lamp’s intensity. The result is simply ingenious and beautifully subtle.
