Sub-Zero and Wolf have announced the Global Finalists of their 2015-2016 Kitchen Design Contest (KDC). The list of finalists, each representing outstanding achievements in the world of interior design, includes five representatives from Australia.
Both brands featured in Winning Appliances “Luxury Collection”, Sub-Zero and Wolf are industry leaders in luxury refrigeration, wine preservation and cooking equipment. The KDC, a showcase of the best architects and kitchen designers in the world, reflects an abiding respect for beautiful and functional design work, qualities that are always evident in the outstanding appliances of Sub-Zero and Wolf.
The Global Finalists were selected by a panel of seven esteemed architects, kitchen designers and interior designers during a four-day review and deliberation of the entries at the Sub-Zero and Wolf headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin.
At the close of the entry period on January 31st 2017, more than 1,500 completed entries had been received from 24 countries. The 25 Global Finalists represent a diverse mix of design aesthetics from across the globe.

That five Australian entrants were amongst those selected is an outstanding achievement and testament to the extraordinary design talent which exists in this country. Those finalists included Matt Gibson from Matt Gibson Architecture + Design, Tony Chenchow and Stephanie Little from Chenchow Little Architects, Miriam Fanning from Mim Design, David Selden from David Selden Design and Fergus Scott from Fergus Scott Architects.
Each kitchen represents the highest standards of form and function.
Matt Gibson’s Abstract House Kitchen (below) is part of the renovation of a Victorian-style house located in the Melbourne suburb of Albert Park. Skilfully blending the old and the new, the kitchen has been designed with a rigorously limited palette of materials, arranged symmetrically and elegantly. Here the simplicity of white gloss lacquer and black detailing is set off against concealed Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances while details such as calacatta marble and the basalt stone floor evoke a resonant timelessness and serenity.

Chenchow Little Architects’ Darling Point kitchen (below), located in a high-rise building just east of the Sydney Opera House, features design that is fresh and full of surprises, with a kitchen island, lighting track and timber ceiling “kinked” to follow the curve of the apartment. Joinery pieces, made from American oak framed in fine white steel, seem to elongate the space, which includes a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer and wine storage, as well as a Wolf 30” oven, microwave and warming drawer.

Miriam Fanning’s The DRF Residence (below), located in Melbourne, is a bright and airy design, with materials such as the soft grey cabinetry, marble backsplash and island surface, and white-oiled oak floors, complementing the natural light flowing into the space. Here the clean lines of Sub-Zero and Wolf products - including an M series oven and convection steam oven - work perfectly with the muted palette while also bringing high-performance cooking to this family home.

David Selden’s kitchen for Sydney’s three-storey “Lumiere Penthouse” (below) represents a communal hub, oriented for optimal city and harbor views. Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances were the client’s choice from the outset and the kitchen was designed for the seamless integration of product such as a 36” dual fuel range with griddle plus a 36” refrigerator/freezer, with the stainless steel island and calacatta marble backsplash affording a streamlined elegance.

Last but not least, the kitchen for Fergus Scott’s “The Farm” enjoys spectacular views of the mountains and the Australian southeast coast - a breathtaking perspective to enjoy while preparing dinner for family or guests. In this environment, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances were chosen not only for their superior performance and design, but for their legendary durability as well. These products are integrated seamlessly into the minimalist materials palette, which includes carefully mitered recycled timber and fine metalwork detail.

All Global Finalists will receive a trip for two to attend the Winners’ Summit and Gala, held from September 24th through 27th at Hotel del Coronado located on Coronado Island just outside San Diego, California. The summit is a rare and invaluable opportunity for finalists and judges to network and share ideas.
The contest’s 10 Global Winners will be announced at the gala honouring their achievements in design on Monday, September 25th in the following categories: first place contemporary, transitional and traditional; second place contemporary, transitional and traditional; first-time entry; small spaces kitchen; outdoor kitchen; and student winner.
We congratulate all finalists on their achievements and wish them all the best at the Gala. You’ll find more information on the beautiful appliances featured here on our Winning Appliances Sub-Zero and Wolf pages.
