October Food News – What’s Happening In The Food Scene This Month

Night Noodle Markets, wine festivals and afternoon tea delights – here’s what’s happening in the food scene this month.

Afternoon Tea With A Twist At The Rabbit Hole Redfern

A new tearoom in Sydney’s Redfern is bringing a modern approach to tea brewing and consumption. The unique décor of The Rabbit Hole, housed in an old builder’s warehouse, combines a Japanese inspired interior by Matt Woods Design with tea bag art by Valeria Burgoa.

The drinks menu features 22 varieties of organic tea, including tea lattes and sparkling brews on tap. If you’re spoilt for choice ask for the ‘Surprise Me’ option and let the experts choose for you. The food menu, created by Cristy Adrian (formerly of the QVB Tearoom), includes a dessert degustation option where four sweet treats are matched with four teas. It’s definitely an interesting way to enjoy afternoon tea.

Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2016 Awards: Who Won The Hats?

The annual The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2016 awards were held last month to honour the best restaurants in the city with 1, 2 or 3 hats according to their overall score out of 20. Chef Hats are awarded for the food alone, with marks being given for factors such as taste, presentation, value, consistency and technique.

The Bridge Room was one of the big winners on the night, winning the title of Vittoria Coffee Restaurant of the Year and receiving a coveted three Chef Hats (awarded to those who gain a score of 18 or above).

The much-lauded Sepia scored a massive 19/20 in this year’s guide – only the eighth time a restaurant has been awarded such a high number in the 31-year history of The Good Food Guide (neither a 19.5 nor a perfect 20 has ever been awarded).

Sydney dining stalwarts Quay and Rockpool also kept their three hat ranking, whilst Bennelong at Sydney Opera House was awarded two hats and named Best New Restaurant for its high-art food “gently and sensitively executed”.
