Interior Styling Ideas: Easy Ways To Make Your Home Cosier This Winter

As the seasons change we find ourselves wanting to create a warm and cosy atmosphere at home. With these easy, low-cost interior styling ideas you can inject warmth into your home without turning on the heater!

Rugs

The easiest way to warm up a room, especially if you have tiled or wooden flooring, is to add a statement rug to it. Consider picking a new colour palette for your home this winter and buy a rug as a focal point – earthy tones, russet reds, as well as light greys and beiges, are particularly good for creating a warm and cosy feeling.

Think about the size of rug that will work well with your room – oversized rugs that extend beneath both your sofa and coffee table work well in the living room, whilst a rug that tucks half under the end of your bed looks cosy in the bedroom. In the dining area, remember to factor in that the rug needs to be large enough to accommodate chairs even in the pulled out position.

Don’t be afraid to introduce a rug into your kitchen area either – you can completely soften the look of a minimal design, add a splash of colour or create a boho vibe by introducing a vintage fabric. We’re seeing a lot of this trend appear on Pinterest at the moment. Scroll down to the pin board at the bottom of this post for some more of our favourite examples.

Cushions And Throws

Changing the colour scheme of a room can be the quickest and easiest way of adding warmth to it. Instead of resorting to painting consider changing your cushion covers for something in a warmer tone and add a thick knitted or fur throw to match them.

Kitchen chairs, in particular, can feel a little cold in the winter so take some inspiration from the Scandinavians and drape sheepskins over the seats for a Scandi chic look that’s practical and cosy. Adding cushions or changing the covers on a kitchen bench seat is also an easy way of adding softer fabrics into your kitchen and dining.

For a colour palette that’s very 2016 search for fabrics in shades of orchid, fig and thyme – they’re the recommended colour pairings for this year’s Pantone Colours Of The Year, Rose Quartz and Serenity.

Artwork and Accessories

If you don’t want to change the upholstery consider switching your artwork to give the room a whole new feeling. Artwork or accessories involving twigs, twine and nature work particularly well in a country themed kitchen.

On a smaller scale adding items like dark wooden photo frames or wintry houseplants and flowers can create a seasonal look cost-effectively. You can also style your home with seasonal appropriate vignettes – incorporate stems, candles and metallic ornaments to create a look that’s as on trends as it is cosy.

Bed Covers and Comforters

Is it just us who likes to change their bedding according to the season? The colder temperatures are a good excuse to not only update the colour scheme in your bedroom but to incorporate warmer fabrics too, like a soft-brushed cotton or flannel that you’ll want to sink into. No matter your preference for bed covers, a plush comforter, extra cushions or several layered throws can create a cosy feel as well as be used to wrap up in.

Scents

The ambience of a room is heavily affected by the scents you use in it. Add warmth to your rooms by purchasing a seasonal scented candle or diffuser. Scents involving woods, heavy spices and cinnamon work particularly well in winter.

Lighting

With the sun setting a lot earlier you’ll need some ambient lighting to set the mood in the evening. On-trend options include an industrial floor lamp or rose gold lamps for your desk or side tables. In the kitchen and dining area consider hanging string or pendant lighting for a more relaxed feeling.
