Transforming a Waverley Bungalow into a Bright, Inviting Family Haven

This charming bungalow in Waverley has undergone a remarkable transformation while preserving its character. Originally a single-level residence with a questionable first-floor addition, the home’s layout was dark and inefficient. The brief focused on opening up the space, introducing light, adding an upper storey for extra bedrooms, and enhancing the connection to the rear garden.

With a playful design approach, LiteraTrotta maintained the home’s street presence while creating a split-level living area that offers an inviting indoor-outdoor connection. A striking cylindrical stair with a half-moon skylight floods the centre of the home with natural light. The lower level features soft white bagged brick, blending old and new, while the lightweight upper level is clad in painted white timber.

The new living spaces seamlessly flow into the garden, showcasing operable timber doors and a beautifully pitched roof. A small deck under an existing Brushbox tree, complete with a built-in BBQ and lights, enhances the garden for entertaining. This transformation has turned the bungalow into a warm, airy family home, filled with bright and playful spaces that invite guests to discover its hidden charm.
