Introducing our monthly round up of what’s hot and happening in the food scene across Australia. This month features an award-winning pop up restaurant, up and coming chefs to watch out for, and the latest food craze social media users have gone nuts about!
Noma Is Coming To Sydney
Award-winning Danish restaurant Noma have announced they will be opening a pop-up restaurant in Sydney’s waterfront renewal project, Barangaroo. Owner/chef René Redzepi revealed the whole team, from dishwasher to general manager, will be relocating to Sydney, but the ingredients they cook with will be purely Australian.
“From the tropical fruit in the north, to the native pepper leaf of Tasmania; the pristine fish and shellfish of the very south, and all the new exotic wonders in between. Our research forays will take us into the bush, around every shoreline, weeding our way through Flinders and Kangaroo Island.“
We’ll have to wait until January to taste what the team come up with. Register to be the first to know about ticket sales here.
Bill Granger Expands In London
Meanwhile in London, renowned Aussie chef Bill Granger has expanded his international restaurant chain with new premises in Kings Cross. Granger & Co is Bill’s third restaurant in London and is set to be his largest in the city with capacity for 86 diners. The restaurant’s décor takes inspiration from the location; with 70s style lamps and leather and brass stools creating a retro railway ristorante vibe. The menu is typically Granger though, with a variety of healthy yet comforting Australian dishes.

Electrolux Appetite For Excellence Awards Recognises Young Talent Of The Culinary World
The tenth instalment of the Appetite For Excellence Awards, sponsored by Electrolux, was held this month to honour the young and talented chefs, waiters and restaurateurs who are making a difference in the hospitality industry. Created by Luke Mangan and Lucy Allon, the awards help find the future stars of the culinary world and inspire young culinary talent by providing money-can’t-buy educational opportunities, unique experiences and enviable prizes.
We were lucky enough to be in attendance at the awards night and sampled some of the fine food created by the finalist chefs. The finalist waiters were on hand to serve guests and when the eventual winner, Brooke Adey, recommended we try fried pig trotter sandwich, we discovered it was right to trust her judgement!
We’d like to extend a massive well done to all the finalists. The winners were as follows:
- Australian Young Waiter: Brooke Adey, Bentley Restaurant and Bar, Sydney
- Australian Young Chef: Jake Kellie, Estelle Bistro, Melbourne
- Australian Young Restaurateur: Bianca Welsh, Stillwater Restaurant and Black Cow Bistro, Launceston Christ Thornton, Restaurant Mason, Newcastle

Social Media Goes Nuts For Nutella Doughnut Milkshakes
First we saw the ‘Freakshakes’ by Canberra café Patissez go viral on social media. But this month everyone’s talking about the ‘Tella Ball Shakes’ by Sydney based Food Craft Espresso, which involves a Nutella stuffed doughnut sitting on top of a Nutella flavoured milkshake and drunk through a thick straw. Although the Nutella original is the most famous, the Tella Balls come in various other flavours including; five-berry jam, vanilla bean ricotta and salted caramel. They look incredible but we’re not sure how practical they are to eat.
Have you tried one yet?
