Coastal Chic is an interior design trend works just as well in the kitchen and dining room as it does in other areas of the home. (Remember that elegant Coastal Chic kitchen Rob and Rose created in week 3 of House Rules?) It’s a sophisticated spin on a beach house with a more muted colour palette and restrained styling that make it so chic. We’ve put together 6 ideas for creating a Coastal Chic look in your kitchen without having to renovate the whole room.

Cabinets
One of the areas in the kitchen that make the biggest style statement are, of course, the kitchen cabinets. We love the very soft teal our customers chose for their kitchen, which was designed by Provincial Kitchens. (Click here to find out more.)
If all new cabinetry is out of the budget why not consider adding a splash of colour to existing cabinets with co-ordinating paint and colourful crockery.

Furniture
Updating your dining furniture is another great way to introduce a theme into your kitchen without a complete renovation. There are a couple of different ways you can interpret the Coastal Chic theme with your furniture. You can create a very bohemian beach vibe with distressed or bleached wood and a white and grey colour palette. Alternatively you can opt for the more provincial coastal look with creams and teals like this look from Laura Ashley.

Appliances
Once your cabinets and furniture are looking Coastal Chic it’s time to consider your appliances. As more kitchen brands are releasing their collections in a wide range of colours it’s quite easy to now tie in everything from your Kitchen Aid to the toaster with your chosen colour scheme. Brands that offer appliances and baking apparatus in coastal blues and greens include Smeg, Le Creuset and Kitchen Aid. You can also pick up matching pots, bowls and tins quite cheaply in shops such as K Mart and Target.

Lighting
Pendant lights make a grand statement in the kitchen and there’s nothing that spells Coastal Chic quite like a woven pendant.

Styling
For the finishing touch, style your kitchen and dining area with beach inspired accessories. Source items such as shells, jars, woven baskets and driftwood for the shelves and consider fabrics with stripes and rope detailing for the windows and seating. You can even inject the Coastal Chic theme into your table settings with woven placemats and mason jar candle holders. Avoid anything too overtly maritime as this can result in a look that’s kitschy.

Scents
Finally, add a coastal scent to your kitchen with candles and diffusers made from sandalwood, coconut and lime. An Australian brand known for creating scents of the coast are Palm Beach Collection. The brother and sister duo behind Palm Beach were thinking of their childhood spent on Sydney’s shores when they created their collection of candles, reed diffusers and soaps.
